Darke delight after crucial victory over Foxes
Rotherham United Ladies strengthened their hopes of survival in the FAWPL with a proverbial six point win over Leicester City Ladies and they showed good resilience to do so, coming from behind to record a 3-2 win.
Simon Darke’s side travelled to Aylestone Park to face the Foxes in the Women’s Premier League midlands Division One clash with both sides keen to take the m maximum points as they looked to lift themselves away from the drop zone.
However, it was the Millers Ladies that prevailed as victors in an entertaining encounter which saw three different players register themselves on the score sheet.
“This was always going to be a key game for the Ladies as Leicester are currently rooted to the foot of the table yet to pick up a point. In order to achieve our aim of staying in this division it was imperative that we managed to win this match and we lined up with the same shape and personnel as our 3-1 win against Solihull Moors.”
Darke admitted his side started slowly and fell behind in the early exchanges as a result, but expressed his delight at their resilience after overturning the deficit to hold on to three points.
“After a somewhat sloppy start that allowed the opposition to take the lead, we eventually started to raise our level and show the greater quality of the two sides. After a great ball in behind Cat McDuff-Viau was able to race through on goal and finish confidently and level the scores before half time”
“The second half saw us take control in the early stages and Phoebe Hallam scored her second goal in three games before Sam Hale scored from close range to put distance between ourselves and the opponents. Leicester City Ladies pushed hard in the closing stages and managed to reduce the deficit but we stood firm to hold on to win.”
